And Now It's Really Real

The surgical scheduler called me back this morning, and she set me up with my hysterectomy date. In just about a month, I won't have a uterus. I've got an email with instructions, and I took notes from the scheduler over the phone. I'll be back at work with kids for a week before the surgery, and then gone for a month or so.

I've started telling the people I need to tell. I texted my co-advisers in NHS today, as well as my department head. I emailed my AP, discovered they're out of state, but they're calling me tomorrow to talk. I've posted about it on my facebook, which I've refrained from doing until I had a firm date.

So, now it's actually happening. And it's scarier than I thought it would be, admitting it to others. People are being supportive, but it's still daunting.

I'm going to start making a checklist of everything I need to do in various contexts, leading up to the surgery date. I'll be adding to it, I'm sure, but there's a lot to get done and make happen between now and then. And I'm sure I'll forget something if I don't start making lists.

Trying not to Panic

I've been waiting since Thursday last for the Surgery Scheduler to call. My GYN-Oncologist said that if they didn't call by today, to give them a call, but it shouldn't come to that.

I called a little after 4 and got the voice mail. I left a message, as requested (though I'm not sure if I remembered to include my phone number), and according to the recording, they'll get back to me within 48 hours.

I'm calling again tomorrow morning. I won't leave a message, since the recording specifically says not to, but I want to talk to a real person. I need to have a date for my hysterectomy.

We got our teacher work week schedules in the mail and via email over the last few days, and there are things I have to go to, assuming I'm not having my uterus removed. Plans for the beginning of the year change depending on when that happens. I kind of need to know.

I've been more or less okay this last week, because I had a deadline I was waiting for. I'd know by today what was happening when. And now I don't. It is not helping my anxiety. Neither has the PMS and today's lovely start of my period, with all that entails. I'm really hoping the worst of it happens overnight, so I'll be asleep through it. Likely not, but a lady can dream.

In other medical news, I talked to my mom today. She's got to start taking meds for her bones - osteoperosis. Which is genetic, to an extent, from what she told me. And she's gotten fitted for hearing aids - finally! She failed her hearing test at her physical, and got referred to an audiologist, who's going to be gradually adjusting the devices so mom can hear better. Apparently ear systems work like eyeglasses - what a "normal" person hears at x decibels, mom hears at y decibels. So they can't just set it to standard, or it'd be way too loud for her. Also, the audiologist said that based on the fact that her hearing loss is practically identical in both ears, it's probably hereditary. More stuff to look forward to when I get older.

Not that I actually mind getting older. Not mentally, at least. I've lived all those years, darn it, and I like being able to say how old I am. I know not everyone is comfortable with admitting their age - even to themselves (I have a few friends who will be "turning 29" for the ninth time this year). I am. What I don't like is the fact that my body has started betraying me as I've gotten older. And, based on what my parents are discovering, it's likely my body will betray me more.

And there is me moaning and groaning. Anxiety talking, making me focus on things that won't likely happen for years, and telling me that no, you need to worry about them right now. You need to worry about all the things right now.

I need to worry about the upcoming hysterectomy right now. I need to plan for it. Which means I need to know when it's happening. So tomorrow, I call again. And I wait by the phone again. Once I have a date, I can schedule things. I can be productive. I fucking hate being in limbo.

It's a few hours early, but the more time for nomination fun the better! If you haven't already please read the rules before you start nominating.

In short:
  • You may nominate up to five fandoms with up to five relationships in each.

  • Both parties must be women or gender questioning/queer people you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge

  • All characters in nominated threesomes/moresomes must be women or gender questioning/queer people you'd be comfortable writing about in a femslash challenge.

  • Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • [Canonical Character]/Original Female Character is allowed. [Canonical Character]/Any is not allowed

  • [Canonical Character]/[Unnamed Character] is allowed in cases where there most likely was a woman, but we don't know exactly who she was, for example: Galadriel/Legolas' Mother in The Hobbit fandom.

  • There will be one category for Original Work, in which you may nominate things such as Princess/Handmaiden, Mermaid/Ship Captain, or Starship Captain/Chief Engineer.

  • You may wish to drop down into the comments below to see what fandoms and pairings others are nominating, and how to nominate large/complicated fandoms. We will be continuing to wrangle most large fandoms in the same manner as previous years, including:

    • Songs with female singers and female or ambiguous pronouns are eligible.

    • All of the MCU movies, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Agent Carter will be listed under Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    • Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be listed together under Marvel Netflix.

    • X-Men (Movies) will now be divided into X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies), X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) and Deadpool (2016). Wolverine movies go in Original Timeline.

    • Marvel Comics will be nominated by universe, for example: Marvel 616, Marvel Adventures, etc.

    • Main-continuity DC comics, including pre-Flashpoint and New 52, will be under DCU (Comics). Other DC universes such as Bombshells will be separate by universe.

    • Everything set in the Doctor Who universe can be nominated under Doctor Who (including Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood).

    • Tolkien fandoms will be split into The Silmarillion – J.R.R. Tolkein; The Hobbit (All Media Types), and The Lord of the Rings (All Media Types).

    • All of the old-continuity Star Treks together under "Star Trek: Classic Timeline (All Series)," AOS under "Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)‎."

    • Stargate will be grouped together under "Stargate - All Series"

    • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: The Series and assorted spinoffs will go together under "Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms."

    • All variations of Sailor Moon will be nominated separately.

    • All Pretty Cure series will be nominated together.

    • All Rune Factory series will be nominated together.

    • FF X and FF X-2 will be nominated as "Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2"

    • All of Dragon Age goes together under "Dragon Age - All Media Types"

    • Kamen Rider variations go together under Kamen Rider - All Media Types

    • Various Sentai properties go together under Super Sentai Series

    • The Les Mis tag will be "Les Miserables (All Media Types)."

    • Law and Order series will be nominated separately by series name.

    • Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow tv shows will be nominated together as "Arrowverse (CW TV)"

If you're unhappy with any of those combinations/divisions, the mods are willing to negotiate, but the sooner you mention it, the more likely we are to be able to change it. If you believe your fandom has changed over the last year in a way that makes the above no longer accurate, or you plan to nominate a new fandom that may need special treatment in a similar manner, please let us know!

If you spot any doubles, misfiled fandoms, random pairing popping up under other fandoms or pairings that don't qualify, comment here. We're going to do our best to wrangle as we go.

Don't waste a nomination! Before you nominate anything, check the tag set to see if your pairings and fandoms are already there.

We also won’t be running a separate nomination discussion post this year due to the timeline being moved up a little, so in addition to any wrangling issues please feel free to talk about what you're thinking of nominating in the comments, discuss eligibility, negotiate free spaces in your nominations with other users, etc.

Okay, ready to go? More than ready to go?

Nominations will remain open until 6pm EDT, 10 August 2017.

Fest FAQs:
Nominations
  • Before signups, we will have a nomination period for people to pick fandoms and relationships that they would like included in the fest. Each person can nominate up to five fandoms, with up to five pairings within each. Please only nominate fandoms that you plan to offer or request.

  • All fandoms in all media are welcome. Canon or non-canon pairings are welcome. Original works are welcome.

  • For the purpose of this fest, femslash is defined as fic or art containing a relationship between two or more characters who identify in canon as either female or genderqueer. (We do not mean to imply that genderqueer = female, but would like to include as many pairings as we can, and leave gender definitions to the participants' discretion). That means you may not request gender-altered/Rule-63/spectrum-shifting works for canon male-identified characters. To be clear:
    • You may request works about cis female-identified characters.

    • You may request works about transgender women, such as Ms Hudson from Elementary.

    • You may also request works about canonically genderqueer and gender-questioning characters regardless of their assigned gender, such as Franky from Skins UK, Alister/Athena from Huge, and Xavin from Runaways.

    • You may request a canonically always female alternate universe version of a character who is male in the main universe, such as Natasha Stark from Marvel 3490

    • You may not request works about characters who are male-identified in canon.

    • You may not request works about male-identified characters who are temporarily transformed or body swapped into an assigned-female body, such as Guy Gardner in Guy Gardner: Warriorette (if you don't know, don't ask).

  • Poly: We do allow poly groupings, so long as all the characters involved are eligible (f/f/f = fine; f/f/m = not in this fest, though you may list it as an option in your optional details.)

  • Crossovers: Please nominate crossovers as under the fandom: Crossovers - Fandom, and list the characters with their fandom after the character name (Example: Pepper Potts (MCU)/Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • RPF: RPF characters must be 18 or over at the time of nomination, and must be public figures in their own right (no girlfriends/kids/parents of public figures permitted).

  • You must have an Archive of Our Own (AO3) account to participate in nominations and sign ups. If you do not have one already, you can leave a comment here or e-mail the mods for an invite code. (For more on AO3 and how to sign up, go here).

Sign Ups
You can edit/delete your signup until signups close.
This is an exchange fest, which means you must produce a fanwork for someone else. If you withdraw, it is harder for everyone involved. So please, think carefully if you have the time before signing up. If you discover after signing up that you can't finish in time, contact the moderators as soon as possible.

Requests
  • You will have an option to select whether you would like to receive art, fic or both. Obviously, "both" increases ease of matching, but you don't have to request a format you do not want.

  • Signups must include 4-6 fandoms from our list of nominated fandoms, and each fandom must have 1-6 pairings from the list of nominated pairings. We encourage people to request more than the minimum, as the more pairings you ask for, the easier matching will be.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

  • While the description section is optional, we strongly suggest you include Do Not Wants. Any DNWs/triggers included in the description will be enforced by the mods. Other things to consider are the inclusion of general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, or anything else you’d like the writer or artist to know. However, please remember that these are optional for the person assigned to you. If you've requested art, please remember that not all fic prompts translate well into art (more on that here). If you have a lot to say, consider linking to a letter in your own blog with the extra details.

  • In your signup, do not imply rank for pairings or otherwise specify a favourite pairing. There is no need to make the person you are assigned feel bad if you want something they are not comfortable writing or drawing.

Offers
  • You may offer to make art, write fic, or both.

  • You may offer between 4-10 fandoms, with 1-10 pairings per fandom. Obviously, the more pairings you offer, the easier matching will be. You can also choose to offer "any" pairing in a given fandom, but please check the tag set to ensure that you're comfortable writing or drawing any pairing listed.

  • You will be matched on fandom, pairing and format (fic or art).

Pinch Hitting
  • In the event we have issues matching someone, they will go out as a pinch hit right away. You can find the pinch hits here.

  • You do not have to have an AO3 account to pinch hit, as you may submit via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • If you do pinch hit, you'll have the option of adding your requests to a special prompts post, so that those who'd like to can reward you with the gift of femslash!

Your Assignment
  • Your fanwork must focus on a requested pairing, and must include a romantic and/or sexual relationship of some kind. This is not a friendship ficathon. That means there should be some kind of f/f romance, longing, kissing, love, and/or sex. You're welcome to offer or request work featuring asexual characters as long as it's in the spirit of this rule.

  • You are not obligated to produce something for ALL pairings on which you are matched. Pick whatever you are comfortable with. However, if you want to write or draw more than one thing for your recipient, feel free.

  • You don’t have to write or draw the fandom/pairing you were matched on if something else your recipient requested interests you.

  • Creators are required to avoid featuring their recipient’s DNWs in their gifts. While it is not required, if possible, please consider using one of your recipient's prompts.

  • Betas are not required, but are strongly encouraged. Fic submissions with excessive spelling, punctuation and grammar errors and art submissions that look like drafts will be rejected. If your submission is rejected for this reason you can resubmit it after you've polished your work. We will have a beta sign up post.

  • Due to the nature of this fest, it is hard for extensions to be given. If you know you won't be able to submit by the due date, please default as soon as possible. If you default prior to the due date, you may participate next year with no problems. If you default two years in a row, simply fail to submit your work by the due date, submit an unfinished work, or delete your already-completed assignment, you will not be able to participate in the next fest.

  • If you withdraw and the person assigned to create something for you withdraws, you will not be assigned a pinch hitter.

  • If you have a problem with, any questions about, or cannot complete your assignment, please contact us immediately at femslashexmod@gmail.com.

Extras
  • Please finish your assignment before you start on treats.

  • You do not need an AO3 account to post treats; you may do so via the mod account. The mods will edit in credit and links to your own platform after the end of the anon period.

  • Treats of polished art and fic over 1000 words may be posted at any time. Please wait until the mod gives the word before posting shorter fic and sketches.

  • This fest has mandatory anon period for fic. Author names will be revealed one week after the archive goes live. Please do not promote your fic before that time.

  • The anon period for art is optional. Because of concerns about crossposting without attribution, artists may sign their work and may link to it, but they are requested not to crosspost the full art until all the end of the anon period. (For more on this, read here.)

Be respectful. Please realize that everyone has different likes/interests/squicks.

Fest Rules:
  1. All fic have to be a minimum of 1,000 words, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift.. There is no maximum word count.

  2. Art must be polished, and be of a quality that you'd be happy to receive as a gift. There is no maximum size for art or page limit for comics. Art must be hand or digitally drawn. We are not accepting manips at this time.

  3. Submissions may be any rating.

  4. Submissions must be femslash, and must focus on a requested pairing.

  5. Please don't talk about the specifics of your assignment in public until the creators are revealed. We'd like it to be a surprise for everyone.

  6. Gfts can't be part of a previously posted series.

Please do not hesitate to leave a comment here or contact us at femslashexmod@gmail.com, if you have any questions/comments/concerns.

New Mods and 2017 Schedule

Hello, everyone! [personal profile] shopfront and I are joining [personal profile] samuraiteras co-mods for [community profile] femslashex, and we’re both very excited for this year’s round. The rules and schedule will be going up shortly, but here’s a shortlist of changes from previous rounds:

  • Schedule: The exchange will be running a few weeks earlier this year, with nominations starting July 26

  • Visible Requests: Requests will be visible during sign-ups. This will allow participants to check they are matchable if they want to request and offer only smaller fandoms, and also allow treaters to start writing sooner.

  • Default Penalty: There is a partial new mod amnesty for defaulters. Participants who defaulted after the deadline, defaulted after an extension, or submitted a placeholder in 2016 will continue to have to sit out this round before signing up again. Participants who have defaulted multiple years in a row will have to complete a treat from a previous year’s requests before signing up for this year’s round, or sit out a round, counting from 2016 onwards. That means that if you defaulted last year and it was a second default for you you can still participate this year. Anyone who defaulted last year and also defaults this year will need to complete a treat or sit out a year.

  • Exchange 101 and Tumblr: In last year’s wrap-up post, several people requested an “Exchange 101” post for people new to AO3 exchanges; that will be up within the week. More of a Tumblr presence was also suggested, and we’ll be more active on Tumblr this round. If you have any suggestions for tags to post to or communities to signal-boost Tumblr announcements, please let us know!

  • There was also some interest in adding vids as a medium this round, but as neither I nor [personal profile] shopfront have any vid exchange experience we are currently focusing on getting up to speed with how things currently run. . We’re both very excited to expand the mediums allowed in the exchange and hope to include vids from next year.

An updated rules post will be up soon. That post will have the schedule as well, but here is the 2017 schedule:
    26 July-10 August: Nomination Period
    13-23 August:: Signups open
26 August: Assignments will be sent out by this date
    7 October: Fanworks due
13 October: Archive goes live (or as soon as everyone has a gift)
    21 October: Creators revealed

Hello, everybody. *straightens tie, pushes glasses up bridge of nose* It's 2017, and we're just about ready to get started on the fifth round of [community profile] femslashex. (Five years! Way to go!) But! There's been a key change, and it's to our staff. Our founder, [personal profile] muccamukk, has taken a bow, and godspeed to her, but she's not left anything to chance. I'm still here in my normal supporting (i.e. bumbling assistant) role, but we've got two all-new mods in the form of [personal profile] shopfront and [personal profile] withinadream, here to keep the femslash train on the rails, so feel free to say "Hello!" and "How ya do!" if that's your thing. We'll be posting our official introduction and time frame(s) here soon, but, for now, just know that we're on the job. :-)

It's Official...

I went to the GYN-Oncologist yesterday. My mother-in-law drove me out the hour to the office. The appointment was a standard GYN appointment, at least in terms of PAP things.

The doctor was nice. He started by asking me what I knew about my current situation, and then went on to clarify things for me.

According to the analysis of my biopsy, there's a 68% chance that the tissue they took is cancerous. But, he said that's a conservative percentage, and to assume that it is indeed cancer until they can examine it more closely.

It's not almost-cancer anymore. It's being called cancer. That's scary.

The doctor was quick to tell me that it's one of the easiest cancers to treat, and that they do the procedures like mine ten to fifteen times a week. He then explained exactly what is going to happen. Hysterectomy. My uterus, cervix, Fallopian tubes, and lymph nodes that attach to the uterus are all being removed. They'll dye those with ink so they don't take the ones attached to my bladder or anything. Five hole-shaped incisions in my belly, kind of like hole punches, to insert instruments and things. Then, they'll remove my uterus through my vagina. Part of the pap was to make sure the vaginal opening was large enough to accommodate the uterus.

As for when this surgery will take place, that's still undecided. The person in charge of it will be calling me to schedule and give me information by mid-week next week. If I don't hear from them, the doctor said to call myself. I've got the cards for both that person and the doctor.

I'm going to take the first opportunity presented for the surgery, obviously. The doctor says recovery time will be between 2 and 4 weeks. And the surgery might not happen before school starts. At this point, I'd prefer it be a week or two after the kids come back, so I can prep them for what's coming and start the school year off on my terms.

I will have to talk to my co-advisers in NHS. With this coming up, I can't devote the mental energy to dealing with induction and all the start-of-year stuffs. Too much stress, and I'm already getting tired just from minimal effort from stress. The idea of adding to it? Nope. I'm going to be reducing Anime Club meetings at the beginning of the year as well, unless I can find a new co-sponsor or sponsor helper who's willing to corral that many kids on Fridays. We'll see.

So, yeah. Uterine cancer. Fun stuff. Anyone else reading this ever have cancer treatments? How'd they go for you? So far, no one's saying I need chemo, but I may need additional surgery to remove the ovaries, depending on how far the cancer's spread in my reproductive system. If I were a few years older, there wouldn't be a question about keeping them - they'd just go.

Mid-July Update

So much has happened in the last few days, I can't limit a post to just one topic. So, in no particular order:

1. My sister got married! We went down last Friday to meet family and do the rehearsal dinner. It was amazing to see my extended family again! Rooming with my brother and his girlfriend...not so much. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep between Friday and Saturday, due to an incident. I was up at 4:40 Saturday morning, so I could go pick up my sister and her maid of honor and get them to the salon for their 6am appointment. We stopped at Starbucks to pick up drinks, and once I'd gotten them and their things settled, I went back out to pick up donuts for the bridal party (and me!). I also had to run out and pick up a full clothes steamer - the travel-sized one they had wasn't robust enough to steam her wedding dress. She offered to pay me back for it, but we've wanted a steamer for a while, and her wedding provided an excuse.

We got her to the venue and into her dress, and the ceremony was gorgeous. My sister was gorgeous. She was beaming and her eyes smiled as much as her mouth. Her fiance was nervous, but just as excited as she was. I got very misty eyed, but couldn't quite cry, because they both were so happy and so very obviously in love. I didn't end up crying till my dad's speech at the reception. The reception was very fun. It started a little late, thanks to a snafu with my sister's dress - the people who'd tailored it didn't give very detailed instructions as to how to properly bustle the train - but no one noticed or cared, aside from my sister. We ate, hung out, danced - and got my parents to dance a few times! - and had a general good time. We blew bubbles at her and her husband as they left the reception, and as everyone started drifting away, my brother and I helped her maid of honor clean up.

She is currently off on her honeymoon in Europe. My sister has never been abroad, so she's going to be so excited! I was completely psyched about her wedding, and being able to help her get ready and get her off on her new phase of life made me so happy.

2. I got the wedding equivalent of "con crud". Not sure entirely what it was, but probably a combination of many, many factors. When we got back to the hotel, I passed out. My wife and I didn't end up going to dinner with the family because I couldn't keep my eyes open. I woke up enough to eat a sandwich, then passed back out. I ended up throwing up before breakfast, and being completely wiped all day - to the point that my wife called the theatre where the play we'd planned to see that day, and exchanged our tickets for next weekend, then drove me home. I was still wiped out on Monday, and was getting better yesterday. I feel pretty good today, to the point that I've done things. I've walked around without getting fatigued, which was a plus. Especially given that I have my appointment tomorrow.

3. OMG NEW DOCTOR!!!!! Now that I'm not completely exhausted, as I was when I found out on Sunday, I can properly squee over the new announcement. Jodie Whittaker! Now, I have no idea who she is, since I've not seen Broadchurch, but I have yet to be truly disappointed by a Doctor. I haven't known much about any of the Doctors before seeing them in the part, honestly, so I'm just living on the squee of knowing. I have thoughts and feels, but I don't have the coherence to put them down just yet.

4. Doctor's visit tomorrow. So, I have my appointment with an oncologist-gynecologist tomorrow in the early afternoon. The office is an hour away, assuming decent traffic. I'm nervous, but I'm looking forward to the visit. It's taking action on this almost-cancer thing, and I'd rather be taking action than waiting. My mother-in-law is driving up to go with me, since my wife has to work, and my mom's too far away for a day trip. Mom's planning to come up for a few days after the surgery, whenever that will be. I'll hopefully have more information on that tomorrow.

So, yay. Life updates. Some happy, some not. I think the positive outweighs the negative right now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll still feel that way after tomorrow.
