palmedfire: (Show Me Your Face!)
Dear Awesome Yuletide Writer!

I am so excited you've going to write me a fic this year! I am sure it'll be wonderful. Optional details are optional of course, and with any of these fandoms I know I'm going to be thrilled with any fic, so have fun.

So. More details about my requests:

Romeó et Juliette
Benvolio Montague

Words can not express how much I love Benvolio. He was my favorite character when I read the original play, and the musical has only made me love him more.

I would love, love, love some pre musical Benvolio/Tybalt stuff, as slashy or not as you see fit. More details about this in my letter.

Otherwise, anything is good, especially post-musical fic. Again, more details in the letter.

It is important to point out right away that I am mainly familiar with the 2010 and the 2011 Takarazuka productions, as well as the Korean tour of the original French production. But if you're coming from a different version, don't worry! I'm going to love anything about Benvolio. That said, on to my attempts at prompts.

Tybalt/Benvolio is my favorite hateship ever. Most of my personal justification for this being a hateship and not just plain hatred comes from the 2010 Takarazuka production, especially the first scene, which I conveniently have a link to: Complete with English subtitles!. Tybalt & Benvolio (and Mercutio) enter at around 3:45. Even if you don't want to go shippy with it, I'd love to see something pre-musical dealing with the bad blood between these two. If you do want to go shippy, feel free to get as explicit or not as you wish.

If you don't want to deal with Tybalt at all, that's fine as well. As I said in my prompt, I'd love something post-musical with Benvolio having to deal with the fact that his best friends (and best enemy) are dead. How does he deal with losing them all so close together? Is he now the de facto heir to the Montague family? What's the fallout from the two families reconciling? How does Benvolio feel about that? If you want to get dark & depressing with this, I'm cool with that idea. I'd rather not see Benvolio die, either by his hand or others, as I find greater tragedy in him having to live with everything.

Ocean's Eleven (musical)
Any

I didn't even know I wanted fic for this until I saw someone else (dybji, I'm looking at you) talking about nominating it. That said, I don't have any real preferences here. I will love anything you write.

More details & me rambling about potential prompts in my letter.

Because I didn't even really know I wanted this until just recently, I don't really know what I want. But I love character focused vignettes, and all of the characters have intriguing backstories I'd love to see explored. I've... not actually seen either version of the movie, and my Japanese is scan enough that I've only got a rough idea of a lot of the characters. So consider that freedom. Write them as they are, as you wish they were or as they could be, I'll still like it. I don't need anything exceptionally plotty - slice of life character pieces are just fine by me, so have fun!

The only thing I absolutely do not want is anything 'redeeming' Benedict. I like him as an out-and-out villan.

Prompt wise... Well, when I first saw this mentioned, it was with the prompt "The Ten Times Rusty Tried To Tell Danny He Loved Him And The One Time Danny Did", which has kind of lodged itself into my brain as something I'd love to read. I'd also love to read anything about Diana - I've been told she was added to the plot mainly for Shirahana Remi, and I think she's an absolutely amazing character.

Sorry I can't offer anything more specific :(

Changeling: The Lost
Any
Changeling the Lost is hands down my favorite of any of White Wolf's game lines. I'm a big fan of the fragile beauty of the changeling's world, the idea that they've endured horrible things, but they're still alive, and they *escaped* and thus there's hope. I'm pretty open about this fandom in terms of what I want as long as that hope is still there.

As usual, more details/ramblings in my letter

With Changeling I've always loved the idea that because of everything they've experienced, they truly understand the wonder and beauty of the everyday experiences that normal people take for granted. I'd love to see a fic that explores that, especially the dealing with the fact that changelings are different now, and nothing is ever the same. But like I said, I do want hope. They've lost their old life, but there's a possibility for a new one.

I'm partial to the Fairest and Beast Seemings as a general rule, and more a fan of the Spring and Winter Courts than the Summer or Fall, but that's a general guideline, not a hard and fast rule.

Guess what! Signups for Yuletide are open!

I don't really write or read fanfic much anymore, but Yuletide manages to make me do both. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a fanfic exchange, based on rare/small fandoms. You can request 3-4 fandoms, and you have to offer at least 4 fandoms to write from (there's over 2000 to choose from). Once signups close there's some magic database-y stuff done, and you're matched with someone to write for, and someone's matched with you. But you don't know who, and that's the fun. Fic have to be a minimum of 1k, but that's not that long, I've found. Then they're uploaded, and you get your fic on Christmas day!

Authors aren't revealed until January 1 though, so it's a lot of fun reading and trying to figure who your author is and such.

I've loved it the past two years, and I'd love to encourage more folk to sign up this year! Sign ups run through Sunday

So what am I requesting you might ask? Well, I did say it was a rare fandom exchange...

3666 / 50000 words. 7% done!

No writing got done today between driving to Nekocon and attending the con and such. Which wouldn't be that bad if I wasn't already so far behind. I'm starting to get that sinking feeling in my stomach, the feeling that I'm too far behind, that I might as well give up, because there's no way I will be able to catch up.

I'm trying to fight that feeling. It's... not going too well.

Nonfiction totally counts for this!

How NOT to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and how to Avoid Them - A Mistep-By-Misstep Guide by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman.

I read far more books about writing than I probably should for the limited amount of writing I actually do. But this one was a lot of fun. Despite the tongue-in cheek title, it's actually very helpful, because they do go through the common stumbling blocks of unpublished writing, complete with hilarious over the top examples. And they keep their advice simple, straight forward and to the point.

Good book to have on your shelf if you're like me and still harbor illusions of becoming a writer some day

My apologies to those who've already seen this on Facebook and/or plurk, but I feel I must share.

Please notice that book I am holding. Notice I am listed as one of the authors. :D

Yes, the copies of Torn Skies and Family Ties are in! No more preordering! So if it pleases you, my dear friends, feel free to buy a copy either direct from the webpage HERE or via Amazon HERE

I am still way too excited about this. I bought three copies and I keep wanting to pet them.
palmedfire: (shiny!)
...because if you can't promote yourself, who can?

Thus, I wish to make everyone aware that preorders are now available for this anthology:

One of those names on that list of contributors is ME!

Thus, you should totally go HERE and preorder yourself a copy. Or two. Or twelve ;) Preorders get the .pdf of the ebook version for free, and immediately! Come on, you know you want to!

Oh, you wanna know what it's about first? Well, the anthology is for the shared world project Torn World, a wonderful collaborative project with a definite steampunk, science fantasy vibe. This is the official blurb from the website:

In a world where time itself has been torn, family is more important than ever.

Explore concepts of kinship - by blood and by choice - in a setting that spans lush rainforests, monster-infested seas, wild valleys, and frozen mountains. Journey between the strictly licensed, steam-powered cities of the southern Empire and the small communal villages in the north that believe they are alone in the world. Meet the varied people and cultures who define family in so many different ways. Glimpse mysteries unique to the temporal structure of Torn World and search for answers to universal questions about belonging and relating.

And heck, if it looks interesting enough, you can even join and help all of us create and explore more of the world!

Or just buy the book. That'll make me happy too]

It is done

With only minor cheesing to fill out my word count when the story ended shy of 50k, I seem to have won NaNoWriMo at 8:30am, November 30! Please to be admiring my wordcount bar:

Isn't it pretty? I am so damn proud of myself. I've been doing NaNo since 2003 and the closest I've ever come before was ~20k. But I stuck with it this year, dragged those words out of my brain and hit 50k. The story as it stands right now sucks. It needs massive rewriting before I even think of posting it anywhere, but I am shoving it away on my computer's hard drive and leaving it alone for at least a month. I think I've earned the break.

Besides, I have my Yuletide story and my Advent Calender fics to write in December. psst - still a lot of dates available on the Advent Calender. Anyone want me to write them fic?

I shall be over here, basking in my accomplishment.

Okay, so I've been a bad girl and forgotten to make a word count post the past few days. Partially because I fell a bit behind on Wednesday and Thursday, but I'm now back on track! Some scenes in my outline have shifted around, and there's one whole scene that I made a largish false start on that I then had to rewrite. Not deleting anything I wrote mind you. I wrote it, it totally counts for wordcount purposes. But I had to restart or I couldn't really continue. So goes. It's interesting. The character I thought was going to be a jackass is turning out to be less of one, and a minor character who'd just been a name + dragon (dragon's name is Mirioth for the, like two of you keeping track of the 'siennes I've used ;) ) has turned into quite a major jerk in my MC's life. I've managed to get a teensy bit ahead due to the write in I attended tonight, though I worry that tiny lead is going to get wiped out by going to AUSA tomorrow. But I am bringing my laptop, so there will be at least a little writing happening!

Today was one of those 'pulling teeth to write' days. Only got about 500 words before I had to leave for work, and got no writing done there. And then it's just been painful getting my brain to focus on story. It keeps wanting to do... anything else. But I made my count for the day damn it, even if I'm pretty sure this is one of the scenes I'm going to have to rewrite from the ground up -.-
Ah well, goal is to write a novel, not a good novel, right? I can edit later.

Still on track. Decided to watch Zorro instead of getting ahead on my word count, but the first really big important scene is done - the scene where my MC Impresses her dragons and throws everything in to chaos. Next few scenes are going to be fun in the 'dropping mountains on people' version of fun.

Only worry is that tomorrow is the day I work Noon-6pm which has been prime writing hours. Then again, daylight savings time ends tonight (Turn your clocks back!) so I might have a client no-show due to the time thing. We'll see.

Still chugging along. Don't feel like commenting too much on that tonight.

Okay, was really tired last night when I got home so I didn't post word count last night. So here is plus the few words I've managed to write this morning:

The green squares are days I made count, yellow for the day I just barely made count, and red for days I didn't make count. Right now today is red, but I hope to fix that. There's local write-in tonight that i'm going to. HOpe that will be good for productivity. That and the fact that I'm coming to the end of my first chapter and the second chapter starts with a Very Big scene.

If anyone is wondering, I will not be posting my novel, despite it's fanfic-ness anywhere until it's done and I've had a chance to make at least one editing pass. I'm also looking for some beta readers, as I am often blind to my own mistakes. Familiarity with Anne McCaffrey's Pern not strictly required, though I am trying to find at least one beta who is familiar with the world.

Still doing good. Made today's minimum barely, but that's 'cause I lost time to syncing my Neo with my computer. Also lost time to discovering the wonders of Scrivner. Seriously, this program is amazingly useful. I'm hoping I win so I can buy it for the 50% off, because I can totally see how it'd be super useful in the planning stages as well.

Still clipping along at a nice pace. Slightly ahead of where I need to be. I think my MC's friendship with the boy she's going to be best friends with has developed a bit too fast, but I can fix that in editing. Go me!

Not the strongest start, but not bad. I've hit my goal for the day and the writing is going along actually quite well. My characters, especially T'shay who is my viewpoint character in the first scene has been reacting to things not exactly as I'd expected, but in perfectly characteristic ways. My main character has had a slight name shift, and is far more sulky than I'd initially anticipated, but she is a teenage girl getting packed up and kicked out of home, so it fits.

In general? I'm pretty darn happy so far. We'll see how the rest of the month holds up.
palmedfire: (CURSES!)
Dear Brain -

Please stop wandering all over the fucking place. I had meant to write tonight. But no, you wanted to do jack shit instead. I have sat here and wasted the past two hours doing absolutly nothing productive. This has been going on for over a week. Cut it out! I would enjoy getting something done for a change.

Me

Word count is on track and I managed to write everything today from the point of view of my protagonist without getting bored of him! I think I might even be starting to figure him out a bit. Still think my antagonist is more interesting, but I think I'm finally getting to where I can throw them at each other for the first time. The trick will be to keep them from killing each other yet.

Hrm. Might end the story like that. Not yet though.
